Every MindMaps tool starts with a question the research has already studied: how does attention work, how do children learn to spell, what makes feedback land? This page collates the peer-reviewed papers and reports that inspired each tool, with links and plain-English summaries, so you can read them for yourself.

Please read this first. MindMaps Education has no affiliation, association or endorsement relationship with any of the researchers, institutions or organisations listed below. Our tools are entirely our own, independent work — they were inspired by this research, but none of these authors designed, reviewed or approved them, and listing a study here does not imply the authors endorse our products. Where a study reports an effect, that effect was found under that study's specific conditions — not with our tools. We link to the original sources so you can judge the evidence for yourself.

Cognitive–motor attention training

Cognitively Engaging Chronic Physical Activity, But Not Aerobic Exercise, Affects Executive Functions in Primary School Children: A Group-Randomized Controlled Trial

181 pupils aged 10–12 took part in a six-week programme comparing physical activity that was also cognitively demanding (team games) against aerobic exercise alone. Only the cognitively engaging condition improved aspects of executive function (shifting). The key idea: it's the thinking-while-moving combination, not exertion alone, that seems to matter — the principle FocusGrid is built around.

Effects of cognitively engaging physical activity interventions on executive function in children and adolescents: a systematic review and meta-analysis

A recent meta-analysis pooling trials of "exercise + thinking" interventions in young people. Overall it finds cognitively engaging physical activity benefits executive functions (including inhibition and attention-switching), with effects generally larger than comparable exercise-only programmes.

Classroom Activity Breaks Improve On-Task Behavior and Physical Activity Levels Regardless of Time of Day

Short classroom activity breaks increased pupils' on-task behaviour by roughly 10–14% compared with control lessons, whether the break came in the morning or afternoon. This is where the "up to 14% more on-task behaviour" figure we quote comes from.

Effect of classroom-based physical activity interventions on attention and on-task behavior in schoolchildren: A systematic review

A systematic review of classroom movement-break studies. Meta-analysis showed a positive overall effect on on-task behaviour and reduced off-task behaviour, with attention scores better after short moderate-intensity breaks than after no break.

Seating arrangements that promote positive academic and behavioural outcomes: A review of empirical research

A review of the empirical seating literature. The clearest finding: for individual, independent work, rows beat groups for on-task behaviour — and the pupils who benefit most are those most prone to distraction. The broader message is that seating should match the task.

Where children sit relates to how liked and how popular they are: classroom geography and social standing are connected. Seating is not just a behaviour-management decision — it shapes peer relationships.

Effects of a seating chart intervention for target and nontarget students

An experimental study of deliberately designed seating charts. Strategic placement changed outcomes for the pupils being targeted — evidence that thoughtful seating decisions are an active intervention, with effects (and trade-offs) for the children around them too.

The canonical account of orthographic mapping: skilled spelling and sight-reading depend on the brain bonding a word's spelling, pronunciation and meaning into a single stored representation. In plain terms — strong spellers remember what words look like, which is the idea SpellVisual makes visible.

Does spelling instruction make students better spellers, readers, and writers? A meta-analytic review

A meta-analysis of 53 studies (6,037 pupils, K–12). Formal, explicit spelling instruction significantly improved spelling — and the gains extended to phonological awareness and reading — compared with no instruction or incidental approaches. Teaching spelling deliberately beats hoping it's absorbed.

Honest footnote: the evidence that adding multisensory elements (movement, gesture) to good phonics teaching produces extra gains is mixed — some trials find no added benefit. SpellVisual's core rests on the orthographic-mapping and explicit-instruction evidence above; the colour, movement and sound options are there for engagement and accessibility, not because we claim they're proven to add measurable gains on their own.

Reading Fluency As a Predictor of School Outcomes across Grades 4–9

Following 489 Italian students, reading fluency predicted school marks across literacy-based subjects — with reading rate the strongest single predictor. Fluency isn't a side skill; it carries comprehension and wider attainment with it.

Teaching Children to Read — Report of the National Reading Panel

The landmark evidence review. Its fluency finding: guided repeated oral reading — reading passages several times with guidance and feedback — reliably improves fluency and supports comprehension (meta-analytic effect around +0.41). Feedback — Teaching & Learning Toolkit

The EEF's evidence summary rates feedback among the highest-impact, lowest-cost approaches available to schools — worth around six additional months' progress on average. The catch: impact depends on feedback being specific and timely, which is exactly the bottleneck our writing tools try to remove.

Re-thinking grammar: the impact of embedded grammar teaching on students' writing and students' metalinguistic understanding

A national study of 744 students across 31 English schools. Grammar teaching embedded in the context of pupils' own writing produced significantly larger writing gains (≈11.5% improvement vs ≈6.4% in comparison classes). Grammar helps when it's connected to the writing in front of the pupil — which is why our tools highlight features in the pupil's own work, not on worksheets.

Honest footnote: not all grammar programmes work. The EEF's own "Grammar for Writing" effectiveness trial found no evidence of improved writing attainment in Year 6. We cite it because the difference between that programme and Myhill's embedded approach is instructive — context and application seem to matter more than grammar drilling — and because we'd rather show you the whole evidence picture than only the flattering half.

Tracking multiple independent targets: evidence for a parallel tracking mechanism

The original multiple-object-tracking (MOT) study — the laboratory paradigm behind FocusTrack and StateVision. It showed people can track several moving targets at once, and established MOT as a standard measure of attentional capacity used in hundreds of studies since.

Studies of interference in serial verbal reactions

The famous Stroop effect: naming the ink colour of a conflicting colour word is slow and effortful because the brain must inhibit the automatic reading response. Ninety years on, it remains one of psychology's most replicated findings and a workhorse measure of inhibitory control — the paradigm behind StroopShift.

The modern classic on the testing effect: retrieving information from memory strengthens long-term retention more than spending the same time re-reading. A week after learning, tested students clearly outperformed re-studiers — the core reason Game-On is built on questions, not revision slides.

Rethinking the Use of Tests: A Meta-Analysis of Practice Testing

A large meta-analysis pooling hundreds of independent effect sizes. Practice testing outperformed re-studying and all other comparison conditions, with a moderate-to-large overall benefit, and low-stakes formats worked well. Frequent, friendly quizzing is one of the best-evidenced moves in learning science.
